Day 45 of 365 day blog: Christmas tree. I am talking about the Christmas tree today. The history of the Christmas tree is rich. The evergreen fir tree was used to celebrate winter festivals, like the winter solstice. The Vikings were known to have used evergreen trees in winter celebrations. The first decorated Christmas tree was in Latvia in the year 1510. They were also used in Germany in the mid 1500’s. Germany is credited for starting the Christmas tree tradition. The history of the Christmas tree in the U.S. dates back to the time of George Washington and his defeat of the German Hessians in 1776. After the war of 1776 many Germans stayed in the U.S. , introduced the Christmas tree and shared their traditions. The first supplier of Christmas trees was Mark Carr, from the Catskill Mountains in New York, he transported them to New York City. He sold small trees for 5 to 10 cents and 8 – 10 foot trees for 25 cents. The tradition of the Christmas tree at Rockefeller Center started in 1933. By now I hope that most of you have a Christmas tree up in your house to celebrate Christmas!
